    Harry,

I would like to put it out there that October sea and air temps for the Azore region is 18° C. The flash point of 100% ethanol is 14° C.  The Mary Celeste was set up for an accident should an open flame enter the hold. An unofficial rule at sea is that a sailor should always step up to a lifeboat or liferaft. Also the pump on deck may have been used to put sea water into the hold to dilute the alcohol rather than pump out of the hold.
