You first solve for distance. As an example, starting latitude of 10 degrees, destination latitude 30 degrees and differece in longitude of 40 degrees. Look at the attached pictures.
The third shows the mid-latitude, 20 degrees arrow, touching the 40 degree difference in longitude curve. The last shows the index arm 2335 nm.
