    Example two..

    Start 10 degrees latitude.

    End 30 degrees latitude

    Difference in longitude, 40 degrees

    1st picture, set to 20 degrees of latitude differences.

    2nd, midlatitude of 20 degrees arrow touching 40 degree difference in longitude, read out distance of 2550.

    3rd, distance 2550 set against 20 degrees of latitude difference gives course of 62.5..

    Per HO 229, distance is 2535.3 and great circle course of 55.9. 

    As expected, rumb line is slightly longer and closer to the equator.
