Thanks for the pointer to the eBay level vials. I've ordered a couple. The ones I got some time back are from a UK supplier, caterpillar_red:
They're more expensive, $14 each, with another $14 for shipping to the USA, but they might be of interest for those wanting new vials rather than new old stock.
The same supplier has 3-arcsecond vials for $23. That would seem to be a much-lower-cost alternative to the Starrett 199Z vials (at ~8 arcsecond), for applications that need the extra sensitivity, say for a striding level on a theodolite. It's probably too much sensitivity for an artificial horizon.
