My airplane's Garmin 530 w aviation GPS gives three choices for map orientation, north up, heading up, and desired course up. Pilots have been lulled into "just follow th magenta line." . Flight instructors were divided, some told their students to hold their paper charts heading up so that the student can visualize on which side lanmarks should appear. I have always been a north up kinda guy and taught my students that way. When using a car GPS, heading up mode is confusing since on roads you are alwas making turns so the immage jumps around a lot so I use north up in the car.
