Then compare those altitudes with expected values. And how do you get those expected altitudes? Well, you get your exact observing location from GPS, you get the exact time from GPS, then you do a reverse calculation from proper ephemeris data and other details, like your exact height of eye, to calculate what the sextant altitude should be. Sounds like a lot of work, right? .. . .
