Frank,
I take for granted that if Gary suggests it, that it makes sense. I imagine it particularly makes sense in air navigation when things are happening so fast.
My hand held GPS spits out Lat and Lon but till I plot it on a chart I don't feel like I know where I am. I'll forget the numbers, the pencil mark will remain.
It is said that Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. If I want to advance a meridian transit sight, a course line on a chart to figure out southing,it seems to me is intuitively more obvious than invoking knowledge of trigonometry.
