That's an idea.
My question arose from reading pages 23, 24 and 25 here (at The Astrolabe Project). The author mentioned rather intricate methods to calculate the azimuth more precisely. I wondered, could it be done by the Haversines?
I'll try the Somner-Line approach suggested by you, because it is possible to draw the perpendicular to the secant line connecting the two latitudes.
But still - the original two-step All-Haversine Doniol looks less complicated. :)
