Ref your question. Almost exactly 20 years ago I was working for a Chinese shipping company, but also had access to a Tiger Moth biplane.
Two of us took off, and climbed through a hole in the cloud. It started to get dark, but we had sufficient equipment, including torches and watches, but no sextant. After reaching 10,000’ I managed to get a 2 PL CN fix, and about 10 minutes later, another.
With a good position, returning to land was routine. I submitted a report to the company, and it was translated, part of which .is reproduced here.
