An interesting sundial From: David Pike Date: 2021 Jul 17, 06:19 -0700
Whilst walking along the bank of the River Trent earlier this week, we came upon this interesting sundial in the ancient village of Burton Joyce*.The builder had taken the trouble to calibrate it in GMT and BST although there were no visible arrangements to correct for the time of year.Unfortunately, the village gardener seems to have underestimated the height of the plants in the flower bed.
*The village is notable for the site of a substantial Iron Age hillfort or bertune, later to be pronounced "Burton" in the Norman fashion (the name of the village until the early 14th-century).Taking ownership of the Burton settlement in the 14th Century, Robert de Jorz added his surname to the village name, which became Burton Jorz and eventually Burton Joyce.
