There is an article in the NZ Herald that describes a wreck in the water off Buka Island, PNG. Clues of Amelia Earhart's fate uncovered in Papua New Guinea plane wreckage - NZ Herald
Buka is east of New Britain (part of Bougainville).
I'm not endorsing the idea presented in the article - just providing it since there appears to be some people who think it is plausible.
Still a bit of a headscratcher going from this to LIDAR of the jungle, however. Given the WW-II history of PNG, I'd think that there would be quite a few aircraft wrecks in the jungle making finding "the one" awfully difficult.
