Alan, I had the same thought when I first looked at this photo. :) It's a funny depth of field illusion. If you look at Greg's hand, holding onto the thing, behind the frame of the sextant, you can get a better sense of scale. He's holding it out to the camera, towards us. But everything is in focus --no depth of field, so you can't see that. In short, the sextant is shorter than it seems to be...
