Ouch! That must have really been painful. Get well soon.
When on contract in another part of the country, far from home, I too struggled for something to do. Until I decided to replicate each method in ye olde Bowditch by implementing it in Excel. When it came to the table lookups, I tried to recreate each table by getting the fundamental underlying equation. This took up a prodigious amount of time, intellectually stimulating too.

PS I never did manage to implement the appendix on occultations. Probably the most obscure and obtuse bit of instructions I have ever read. I think it was in there to impress seamen with complication rather than to offer useful advice and methodology.
