Thank you very much to both of you for your 2 different and complementary replies (here and here).
Searching for "terrestrial refraction" definitely seems a good starting point and I will take a close look at all the references both of you pointed me to.
So, I am quite happy with this 1st part of the computation tools required to accurately solve for the Photographer's position on this picture.

As for the 2nd part, i.e. the one pertaining to obtaining accurate and reliable Altitudes above the WGS84 Ellipsoid, I am running into unexpected difficulties which I will fully report very shortly onto NavList.
