Re: Any tips for using a transit for celestial shots on land?

I am using a K & E 30 second transit, wish I had a Gurley, but they are big bucks. Having used both for many years, I don't find the Gurley to be better for any practical matter. I routinely use the magnifier, I would  not be able to see anything without it. I agree, that pre-calculating and setting is the way to go. My sextant readings will be with an artificial horizon, so dip is not a consideration, and of course its not a concern with the transit. Being used to using a tranist in daylight makes operation in darkness a trick. Headlamps and LEDS keychain lights are the ticket.
