Marty,
Years ago when I tried taking star sights at night using my transit I placed tissue paper, like a camera lens shade, around the front of the transit. I could then shine a light onto the top of the paper and see the cross hairs. The front lens isn't covered. You're only placing tissue paper around the front barrel of the transit.
