I agree that the pips are a historical oddity that no longer serve a purpose. If you want accurate time then use either NTP ( over the internet) or DAB (over the air.) NZ does not have DAB and with internet streaming and the high availability of fibre I do not think it ever will.
But........the pips are an interesting 100 year old tradition. If it does not cost very much to broadcast them then maybe RNZ should continue the tradition. Unfortunately one day a generic manager who does not understand RNZ culture will probably make an arbitrary decision to abolish the pips and that will be that. The reality is that my children do not listen to the radio and if I asked them about the pips they would probably stare at me blankly.
