From Frank Maxwell to Frank Reed,
My position in the world is S33.8,E150.7, inland from Sydney Australia. I have no chance of taking backsights even when I take my sextant to the east coast. One navigator does use backsights; Leonard Gray in his book 100 Problems in Celestial Navigation. I love this book. It is the armchair navigator's practical bible. I have done every problem in this book 100 times except problem 4-8 on page 28 concerning backsights. I am a dedicated lurker of the Navlist since always, though I have been helped with a couple of questions by a couple of guys. I have taught myself celestial navigation with every book on the subject I could get, augmented by the talk of all the guys on the List. My interest in navigation started by just wanting to know how those old guys in sailing ships did it.
