Here's a youtube video where you can learn a little about the Bajo people who have been living a maritime nomadic existence in parts of Indonesia and neighboring countries for centuries. About six minutes into the video, they talk a little about using the stars for direction.
Although Polaris is only visible, and that just barely, in part of their territory, the Bajo have a unique geographic advantage for astronomical direction-finding in their home waters...
