Setting the word processor UTF8 character encoding retains all kinds of special characters quite robustly.
MS Word is known to often have difficulty to handle standard compliant UTF8 though- Libre Office is more robust in that regard

Hello, all - I'm very glad that my guest post re-kindled a bit of interest on the Bygrave-type instruments and thank you for the kind words.
Bill sent me a note that I should take a fine pen and add the missing umlauts in the German instruction text that is on the sides of the MHR1 reproduction. Here is the fixed up instrument - please forgive my less-than-steady hand!
