Here's the complete discussion and some others that it spawned ten years ago. I want to say that mentioning this old post is not intended to say, 'yeah yeah we already know about that. it's in the archives!'. NavList discussions tend to be quite ephemeral, and it's only chance that I remembered this one. But maybe there's something in that old discussion that's worth noticing today... My problem with this equation as published (even after fixing the radical) is the four digits of significance in the numerical denominators. They are variable depending on refraction, and four digits is really too much.
