I always found the 1977 edition of Bowditch to be very informative having 43 pages on sight reduction and 59 comparing various methods of sight reduction. I bought it (2 volumes) then for 30 German marks (about 12-15 USD at the time). It also contained a discussion of the Dutchman's log - used since the 16th century but may have been named as such for the first time by Edmund Gunter much later - that had been dropped from the 1918 Admiralty Manual of Navigation (but taken up again in its 1938 edition).
Best regards
Wolfgang
