I Have nothing on HB. However, it might have originally come from the H.Hughes and Son stables. The company was remarkably stretched during both World Wars and was not averse to pushing work out to others. Your box sextant looks remarkably like a more recent version of this model http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artjul23/dw-brass&glass-2.html . I would imagine it was used mainly for taking quick horizontal sextant angles (as opposed to using a theodolite) in the field by military surveyors or artillerymen. DaveP
