By mentioning ‘artificial horizon’, you suggest that your box sextant would have been used vertically. Had you considered it might also have been used horizontally in the field in conjunction with a map with marked features and a station pointer, graph paper, or geometry? The geometric solution gets a bit complicated. It took me an hour to remember it from 1983. I bet Gary LaPook will know. DaveP
