In the Christian tradition, for reckoning the date of Easter, a lunar month belongs to the calendar year in which it ends . The Gregorian calendar's prediction for the date of the new moon was this past Friday, so "Happy New Year" of sorts.
(Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like any sort of lunar calendar, by itself, is accurate enough for a "long-term almanac" of sorts.)
