I’ve also tried my minimalist kit ,just EqoT and Dec table stuck to the Davis 3. Have generally got to within 15nm doing just meridian passages, estimating LAN with alts 1 hour before and after apparent noon. No need for slide rules, Doniol or any calculations other than Dec EqoT simple additions and subtractions.
You still need basic charts though! Knowing lat and long is not very useful without charts. That is the big problem for me re micro minimal kit. My smart phone + solar charger has everything, but I guess that is cheating!

So size does matter afterall! (small is beautiful)
see my post from Nov 2014 . My minimalist lit includes the Otis King Plus micro trig tables. Can do cosine formula to 4 decimal plasces or Bygrave or use it for the multiplication step in the Doniaol. . The Otis King is 6 " long when folded.
