I had the same experience in 1983 boarding a flight at Washington National Airport. Asked what was in the wooden box, I replied: "a sextant". The agent did not want to hear any explanation. Just move on! I supposed the heard word 'sex' and some piece of machinery were just too, too much. In 1977, heading out of New Orleans, I had a lensatic compass in my briefcase; it's befoe me now as I write this. "What's that?" I was asked. I took it out, rotated it til North was aligned and said "that's where Santa Claus comes from". Geeesch!
