... the manuel focus doesn't allow the camera to be locked in at infinite focus :(
I remember going through all the menus and settings for the SX160, so I took the liberty of downloading the G9 manual to see what's up. Do you by chance have "Safety MF" set to "on" as shown on page 126? If so, the half-press of the shutter button will be touching up your focus, which is exactly what you don't want.
Sometimes the focus can be set to slightly past infinity, so you might want to back off a tick or two to see if things get any sharper. (As a data point, though, the proper setting on my SX160 was right at infinity.) You'll want to be shooting at the aperture that maximizes your resolution (since there's plenty of light); this is typically stopped down one stop or maybe 1.5 stop for prime lenses, but I'm not sure if this rule-of-thumb holds for small zooms.
