Castro Compass Locking Lever?

I'm just fiddling about with a MK2 Astro compass. Above the vernier screw there appears to be a thumb operated lever. The lower side of the lever is currently engaged in the worm gear. The mechanism is free but won't fully operate. The thumb lever moves slightly but appears to be jamming the worm. I suspect the lever is out of position. Can anyone shed any light on this. Can't find anything online so far.
