Managed to work it out. I've attached a couple of pictures. The lever was indeed out of position. I thought I'd have to dismantle the whole thing but by removing the worm the lever fell back into the correct position. Reassembling the worm with the leaf spring over the end of the lever presses it against the worm. I can't understand how the lever could have overidded the worm gear. No sign of previous disassembly. Could have been a manufacturing error. I thought I'd post this in case it helps others.
