an interesting article about a celestial-based sensor system, "Sky Position and Azimuth Sensing System" (SkyPASS). It uses optical sensors for imaging sun (or moon), stars and polarization, to as alternative navigation systen when GNSS is not available. When the objects are not visible it uses atmosperic polarization to determine the position.
