Regarding mechanical pencils tearing holes in shift pockets, the long gone Pocket Protctors served well to guard against that. They checked leaky ball point pen problems too, should you still have any round. HB leads, being on the soft side, likely smudged too. F leads being a mite harder, smudged much less, this from an old, retired draftsman-designer from days of yor, when engineering drawings were made with pencils, straight edges and triangles.
