Alan,
Not worried about the shirt pocket but rather the plotting sheet so 0.7 mm seems to be the pencil lead width which doesn't tear the plotting sheet when pressed hard.
0.5 mm is ok on the older sturdy charts and index cards. I like HB because it is a little darker. Smudging can be reduced by using Pentels best AIN leads.
