I Wrote: Milly Miffin made a muffin more than Molly’s mother made, and Milly Miffin’s mother made a muffin more than Molly made. Milly, Molly’s mother, Molly, and Milly’s mother made a total of 50 muffins. However. Milly and Molly’s mother between them made four muffins more than Molly and Milly’s mother made. So how many muffins did Milly Miffin make? (JAN Hunter ‘Fun with Figures’) DaveP
Answer
Let Milly make n muffins, so Molly's mother made n-1 muffins. Let Milly's mother make m muffins, so Molly made m-1 muffins.
We know that (n+(n-1)) + (m+(m-1))=50 or n+m=26 -------(1)
Also: (n+(n-1))-(m+(m-1))=4 or n-m=2 -------(2)
Eqn (1) + Eqn (2) gives: 2n=28 or n=14
So Milly Miffin made 14 muffins, or a bakers dozen plus 1.
Well done Don Seltzer for getting it correct. DaveP
