One thing which always catches me out on a gin-clear, quiet day upon first hearing an approaching high-flying aircraft is that it’s no good looking in the direction of the sound to see the aircraft. You need to look about five miles ahead of the sound. Of course, if there’s no con trail, as sometimes happens, you also need to assess which direction is ahead. DaveP
