Sometimes one have no other choice than quadratic fit. This is the case when one missed the moment of meridian passage (due to coming clouds or being too late with starting shooting the sun and so on). Having only a few points before (or after mer. pass) one can "restore" the rest of the curve by means of quadratic extrapolation and thereafter locate it's maximum.
As an example I attached my old report where I missed the moment of culmination but nevertheless managed to determine both Lat and Long quite accurately.
