Pick a vertical tower, pole, or structure a few miles away to observe with the sextant held horizontally. Line things up and read index error on or off arc.

Date: 2015 May 10, 06:56 -0700How can you determine index error of a Davis Mark III sextant, if there is no free sight of a horizon? (I am in the backyard, with only a artificial horizon).
NB:the filters off the horizon "mirror" are very light, so even with sunglasses not possible to look direct to the sun.regards,
