Herman,
High clouds can work in a pinch if the edges are sharp. Try and find some Mylar Solar film. Taping this film to the sight tube will work for direct Sun observation. I recommend Thousand Oaks Optical film. If the index mirror shades on the MK 3 can be removed and taped in front of the sight tube then there will be enough shading for index error by Sun.

The horizon shades are too light, I used last night Venus, that works, but is not useable if I want to use the sun. So perhaps high cloud with sharp edge. Hopefully not to many clouds that hide the sun.
