Coming as I do from the British tradition I usually reach for a British text book. However sometimes I decide to check Bowditch. I am pleased that I did so when researching sailings. Article 810 in Bowditch 1958 gives a far clearer explanation than the British books I have looked at.
Note that strictly speaking this is off-topic - sailings probably have nothing to do with CN.
