I came across a paper “Notes on the Errors of Stadimeters” by Midshipman G.P. Schuyler, US Navy, published in 1909 in the Proceedings of the U.S. Naval Institute.

The errors discussed relate to the methodology by which the stadimeter was evidently used to keep station at a distance from another ship, rather than errors arising from within the instrument itself. I see that towards the end of the paper, some limited references are made to the mechanism within the instrument.
