Re my 28th 20:54 UT. Well I was almost correct. I found the true instructions here https://www.ebth.com/items/9585360-schick-u-s-navy-bureau-of-ships-stadimeter Photograph 8. It's the arc you set the known value on and the drum you read the distance from after you've put to top of one image against the bottom of the other. Fun though; init. DaveP
