The proper name of the device you describe is "taffrail log".

At about 21 +/- minutes the film shows the determination of speed by “casting the log”. I’ve always imagined the “log” to be smaller......I recollect seeing a smaller one somewhere. Letting the line drag on the railing does not seem like a proper practice unless the total procedure has been calibrated against two known marks and where there are no other affecting circumstances. At some later point a “fish” with a propeller and counter was used. The “fish” was solid brass and a beautiful device. I just can’t remember the proper name. From: Greg RudzinskiSent: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 9:00 PMSubject: [NavList] Doc On Worst Jobs at SeaThis link will take you to a documentary on the worst jobs at sea.
