I thought that Gary's excellent info on communicatons (in extremis) with commercial aircraft should be more widely known amongst leisure sailors.

Now I am now not so sure.  There has been a huge increase in relatively inexperienced sailors who can not leave a marina berth without calling the coastguard for a "radio check".  On a fine weekend afternoon, this seems to be reaching epidemic proportions.  I can imagine a situation where, having completed their radio checks on marine band vhf their attention will switch to calling on aeronautical frequencies, with predictable results.
