I am sorry if this has already been mentioned but there is an entry in "100 Great Problems in Elementary Mathematics" - H. Dorrie pg. 323 - called Gauss' Two Altitude Problem that gives a straighforward solution to finding the latitude and longitude of an observer given altitudes of two stars.
