After reading a biography on E Earhart ( considered one of the more authoritative) - and having myself, navigated in the same area, with similar navigational techniques – and studying the final route information, weather, astro-fixes my estimation has always been running out of fuel somewhere NW – N of the island within 100 – 150 nms.
But 15000 ft down is a long long way – cold as, but corrosion at that depth would be slow
But as one expert said – that was a big WWII naval battle arena and a lot of aircraft went down there.
