Balfour, the radio operator in Lae, wrote that Noonan was in his radio shack at 10 pm the night prior to the fateful flight to get a time radio check so he wasn't drinking that night. There are many alcholics who manage to show up sober on Monday mornings motivated to avoid losing their jobs. On this job, if Noonan didn't perform properly, he died. Looks pretty motivational to me.
