I have found the most effective way to find the IC for an A-12 is simply to take a series of sightings of the sun through local noon.
My solution to a stable platform for the A-12 while taking sights is to sit down, cross-legged, with my back against a suitable wall, or tree, or fence, or whatever, then put my elbows on my knees. This provides two legs of an effective 'tripod', the third leg of which is achieved by resting that A-12 against my face. A little wriggling around is needed to achieve a relaxed position, but once achieved, a very steady platform results.
