Dear Roger,
I decided to implement the "belt with suspenders" approach:
- the number of leading zeroes is denoted by an underbarred-subscript;
- the number of leading nines is denoted by an overbarred-superscript;
- these numbers are moved to the right of the decimal point - where the supposed stuffing is actually taking place;
- the comma is used as decimal point for numbers not undergoing the transformations.
Please comment if this is better or worse still.
