My friend Dennis di Cicco went on a Sky & Telescope tour that flew across Antarctica to observe a total solar eclipse (about 15 years ago, if I remember rightly). Being a tour leader, he got to sit up front with the pilots. When they got quite close to the pole, various loud alarms suddenly went off -- the gyrocompass had detected a very rapid change of course heading, south to north, and concluded the plane was chaotically out of control! (Dennis said the pilots had expected this and weren't the least bit startled.)
