Thomas Klausen:
You might try a few sun shots, am and pm, 4 hours apart. If you know how to do this, compare your fix results with coordinates, latitude and longitude of some particular object that's convenient to you. If you can shoot both the sun and moon, doable during several days of the month, that would give you a 2 body fix. If there is a Coast Guard facility near by, I assume they would give you latitude and longitude, which you could check against your derived position. Otherwise, for $250, looks like you might have a real find, Plath sextants having been very good instruments. By the way, if there is a Power Squadron outlets nearby, I imagine they could be of some help. Good luck in any case.
